How to set up environment variables on OSX El Capitan.

  1. List all environment variables using the printenv command on terminal.
  2. Check if environment variable is found on the list.
  3. If not, use the command line to set the variable. Type “export environment_variable_name=your value”
  4. Type printenv and you should see the env variable in the list.
